Melody Ellis

Melody Ellis creates jointed figures with bright rich surfaces and elusive postures. Her pieces convey a sense of joy and mystery reminiscent of the antique toys and dolls which inspire them.

Her small-scale articulated figures and tile work are handbuilt of red earthenware. Through this technique the artist explores texture and detail in the surface of the clay. The works are finished by layering brightly pigmented slips and glazes in multiple firings to achieve richness and depth.

Ellis studied ceramics and metals at Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Scotland and received her BFA in ceramics from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA in 1995.
